Social and Religious Affairs

Overview

The Directorate plays a crucial role in health care services through providing social care that helps medical recovery patients and persons suffering from long-term health and psychosocial wellbeing to get back, get up, or improve their skills and functionality that have been lost or impaired as the result of illness, injury, disability, or side effect of medical treatment.
We register religious institutions and places of worship, in line with the laws of Sierra Leone, and monitor and enforce their compliance with laid-down or expected standards of social decorum and other responsibilities.
We also handle the in-country administrative services for the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia and Christian pilgrimage to Israel, Rome and elsewhere.
In rehabilitative care and support to persons suffering from long-term physical and psychosocial conditions, the issues that the Ministry responds to could be physical, emotional, mental, or cognitive.
The Directorate provides support services to:
PWDs – promote their rights, empowerment, inclusion, equal opportunities, and access to services.
Religious bodies – registering and monitoring faith-based centres and organisations (including Mosques and Churches) and facilitating interfaith dialogue and cooperation.
Older persons – promoting their well-being, independence, and social inclusion.
These services include adult safeguarding, caregiver support, residential care services, social and recreational activities and access to healthcare.
Returning migrants and deportees – working in collaboration with local partners, community groups and development partners to create a comprehensive and effective system of support for them. This ensures their successful reintegration into society, by supporting their social and economic integration and facilitating access to essential services.
This may include transportation, accommodation, financial assistance, and psychosocial support. Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) – in collaboration with MoH, donors, healthcare providers and community organisations, we play a crucial role in VVF services, including prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and psychosocial support.
Widows – services including financial assistance, social support, counselling, support groups and community development programmes aimed at empowering them to become active and self-sufficient members of society.
