Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services
Overview
In collaboration with NDMA and other partners, we are one of the Government institutions responsible for responding to disaster incidents; with a specific role to provide psychosocial, immediate-term shelter, feeding; medical, and related support to victims of a disaster.
We share with the MoHS and NDLEA, the responsibility to provide for mental and psychosocial wellbeing of the people of Sierra Leone. The Ministry has shared responsibilities for social and behavioral change communication around narcotics use, medical treatment for mental health patients, psychosocial support for mental health sufferers and provision of rehabilitation, recovery and reintegration services to individuals affected by substance use disorders including Kush.
MoSW supports Government’s policy work around mental and psychosocial services with data evidence.
This Directorate offers a wide range of mental health services, including crisis intervention, support groups, counselling, and preventative measures.
The Directorate also plays a crucial role in coordinating care, improving access to services, and promoting mental well-being within the community.
They also undertake mental health awareness campaigns to encourage early intervention and promote positive mental health practices.
This Directorate also plays a key role in disaster risk reduction, advocacy for community-based mental health, policy/legislation and ensuring that mental health is integrated into wider public health strategies.
